Velvet Cacoon –
Genevieve. Velvet Cacoon, was a mysterious black metal band based off of
the city of Portland, Oregon. Consisting of 2 members: Josh (SGL)
& Angela (LVG), VC have convincingly created a particular sound by blending
in traditional black metal with genres such as ambience and shoegaze all together to establish a
lavish product. Their band name derives from their abuse of dextromethorphan
and from a local catacomb they would frequently visit for tranquility and to
simply write music. Not much is known about their origins or their introduction
to their musical careers. They have claimed to have a drummer (SKV) who passed
away from tumbling off of the Cascade Mountains. In addition, VC also coined
their special instrument called the diesel-harp, which was some sort of diesel powered
guitar that had been amplified and recorded in several underwater aquariums to
create music for their discography. With bundles of early demos in the late 90s
that never saw the light, and heavy influences of ELF (Earth Liberation Front)
and the band being asexual with having no interest in procreation, the question remained… WHO WAS THIS
BAND??? Anyway, Genevieve is a modern day hidden jewel in the black metal genre. This
is VC’s 1st actual release to the market and the public and it was
released through the record label, Full
Moon Productions. The album begins bold with the introductory powerful
track called, “1”. A calculated drum
machine makes its way accompanied by foggy shoegaze flavored riffs to already
create a dominant start for the album. The vocals then make their way to hype
up the track even more. Josh stated that the vocals aren’t meant to tell a
narrative, as they’re more inclined solely for sound purposes. Another highlight is
around the middle of the track, the atmosphere immediately shifts and you’re
then taken underwater where the track for a minute sounds like a dark
drone/ambient track. After the minute, you’re then taken up ashore with the reoccurring
haze drowning you. A really nice crafty effect indeed. The 3rd track called, “Avalon Polo” hints more of the ocean. A familiar sound emerges
with a lighter and brighter sound than the introduction track as it slowly
devours you down. The ending of this track deals with soft guitar strings
without the mist and the sea. The following track is a song that I didn’t
digest well when I first heard it, but later has become one of my favorites. The
track is called, “Laudanum”. A very
compelling crafted track that is tagged along with noisy loud guitar riffs and
with emotional and lucrative high vocals that will knock you off. The track
picks up well when the strings switch gear and you hear the addition of soft
piano keys being added to the raw loudness potential the track presents. A very
tragic ambient piece concludes the track that’ll make you weep or will leave
you frozen for a minute or so. As we make our way through the end of the lp, “Fauna & Flora” is a more brutal eerie
track that I personally fell in love with at 1st listen. So dark, crispy and ethereal that it’s hauntingly beautiful and it certainly adds replay value to the song. The
self-titled album track, “Genevieve”
also kills and delivers a smooth harmonic production. I love the rhythm of this
track and how glossy these guys can make black metal sound. The closing track
of the album is, “Bete Noir”. A long
18 minute ocean influenced ambient piece that you can use for driving or simply
just to zone out and storm thoughts. In conclusion, repetition is a heavy notable
key in this album. This album is not an easy one to digest at first listen but
will be damn well rewarding if you do come back to re-listen. Aftermath is the
early demos were never real to begin with, the band was releasing plagiarized works from
different bands and profiting off of them as well. VC practically were trolling around in
the black metal genre. Lmao. The audience are now questioning who really
released the album, "Genevieve" or if this album is even a legitimate album. Furthermore, people
are also releasing their music via name Velvet Cacoon to expose their music
too lolol.
